Technical Workshop: Using Spatial Analyst, Model Builder, and
Implementing ArcGIS Data Models"

This hands-on workshop is an introduction to using ESRI's ArcGIS software
for GIS spatial analysis.

"Problem Solving
using GIS: Applications in Oceanography, Geology, and Multidimensional
Modeling"
Anderson 212, 10:30 am - 12:00 pm This workshop will demonstrate how a GIS can
be used to visualize key oceanographic concepts. Topics covered
will include sea floor spreading, plate tectonics, bathymetry,
and the layers of the Earth. ArcGIS will be used to demonstrate
global ocean phenomenon including, exclusive economic zones,
marine pollution, and oil pollution. There will be a focus on
the hydrological and marine data models and demonstration of
how they are used in GIS problem solving.

"Light
on the Hill Award: Nick Birnback"
The Light on the Hill Award has been presented annually since 1995 to
Tufts alumni who are leaders in their fields, who have offered constant
support to Tufts and who are outstanding role models. It is the highest
honor the student body bestows on an alumnus/a.
Cabot Auditorium, 8-10 pm
Nick Birnback received his B.A. in International
Relations from Tufts University and also has a Masters degree in Public
Policy at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs
at Princeton University. He was the recipient of the Herbert Scoville
Jr. Peace Fellowship, and he received the Elie Wiesel Foundation for
Humanity 2000 Humanitarian Award as part of his work with UNAMET. Mr.
Birnback also was the recipient of the EPIIC Alumni Recognition Award
in 2003.

New Geography of Conflict in the Middle East: Using GIS to
Inform Decision-making for Marine, Hydrologic, and Oil Resources"

This workshop will provide an introduction to marine GIS, coastal
resource management, and research challenges for oil and water, including
a demonstration of how a GIS is used for global ocean analysis using
examples from a marine archeology case study in Israel. It will also
be an introduction to new ways that a GIS can be used to inform decisions
on contested resource issues in the Middle East.
