Roundtable Discussion on U.S. Role in Rebuilding Haiti

March 3, 2010
Cabot ASEAN Auditorium, Tufts University | 7:00pm8:30pm

What should the role of the U.S. be in rebuilding Haiti? Does the U.S. have a special historical obligation to help Haiti recover and rebuild? How can U.S. and international relief and development efforts be most effective and build upon local Haitian mechanisms of development and recovery?

Join members of the Tufts faculty, Haitian scholars, and a U.S. Lieutenant Colonel for an interactive panel discussion about the appropriate role of the United States in Haiti's recovery. The program will include statements by each of the speakers, a panel discussion, and a Q&A session. An outcome paper with key takeaways, policy recommendations, and guiding principles will be published after the event.

Speakers include LTC Dale R. Buckner, SSC Fellow at the Fletcher School; Alix Cantave, UMass Boston and Tufts UEP Program Lecturer and Associate Director of William Monroe Trotter Institute; Peniel Joseph, Tufts Professor of African-American History; and Katrina Swett, Tufts Professor of U.S. Foreign Policy.

Sponsored by Sigma Iota Rho, RESPE: Haiti, Discourse, IR Director's Leadership Council, Tufts IR Program, and the Institute for Global Leadership.
