Dr. Rubin "Hurricane" Carter Speaks at Tufts
On Tuesday February 8, Dr. Rubin "Hurricane" Carter spoke to a packed audience about his experience of being incarcerated for 20 years for a crime he did not commit, and his work since his release in 1986 to help free others who have been wrongly accused.
This event was the inaugural public forum dedicated to the memory of Professor Gerald Gill, a member of the Institute's Faculty Advisory Board and a close friend.
The Tufts University Community Remembers Gerald Gill
The Institute has begun a new initiative this year dedicated to oral history, The Gerald Gill Oral History Scholarship, which will be awarded each year to Tufts students pursuing research projects reflecting issues of social justice.
The first Gerald Gill Scholarship has been given to Benjamin Cohen, a senior majoring in African American Studies. Benjamin will be a researcher this upcoming summer for Dr. Carter and his organization Innocence International. Innocence International works to coordinate the activites of various innocence projects around the globe, working against the miscarriages of justice perpetrated against the wrongfully accused.
