Women In Defense award to Sarah Charlton

The National Defense Industrial Association’s Women In Defense affiliate awarded HORIZONS scholarships this fall to six students.

“Seeing so many candidates pursue STEM-related fields — science, technology, engineering, and mathematics — was gratifying,” said Brenda McKinney, Women In Defense HORIZONS scholarship director.

The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage women to pursue careers related to U.S. national security and defense and to provide development opportunities to women already working in these fields. Since 1990, 110 HORIZONS scholarships totaling more than $150,000 have been awarded.

One of this year’s winners is Sarah Charlton, Tufts University, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Security Studies, Islamic Civilizations, $12,000. Sarah is a Teaching Assistant for the EPIIC Program.

Sarah Charlton is a second-year graduate student at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, where she is studying for a master's degree in International Security and Southwest Asia and Islamic Civilizations. Prior to her studies at Fletcher, Sarah spent six years working as a management consultant for Monitor Group, where she consulted to both the public and the private sector with a particular focus on the challenges of emerging economies. While working, Sarah spent extended periods living in South Africa, Libya, France, the UK, and Canada, and ran projects across North America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Sarah is a graduate of Harvard College, where she studied intellectual history.
