Samuel James, the inaugural recipient of the Alexandra Boulat Award for Photojournalism from the Institute for Global Leadership and VII Photo Agency, had his photos on rising Islamic violence in Maiduguri, Nigeria published in the August 18, 2011 edition of the New York Times.  The Times also featured a slide show of his work in Maiduguri.

Since 2007, Samuel has been working on an extensive documentary engagement with Nigeria, Africa's most populous and largest oil-producing nation.  He used the Boulat Award to continue his work in Nigeria, specifically exploring the realm of Area Boys in Lagos.  His work can be seen on the VII web site.

Samuel is the Program Coordinator for the Institute's Program on Narrative and Documentary Practice and will be teaching the Program's introductory seminar this fall (scroll down to EXP 0051 F).
